Preamble

what should exist? To me, that's the most exciting question imaginable. What do we need that we don't have? How can we realize our potential? What will it take to solve important problems and improve people's lives? What should exist, and how might we create it-right now? I have always been captivated by new ideas that answer these questions. From technology to science to music to art, I'm inspired by those who've blurred the boundaries, who've looked at the possibilities, and said, "What if...?"

Welcome and thank you for finding time to visit my website. In this site I describe myself in fair detail. Come on with me on a journey of discovering who John Kebaso is.

My name is John Nyabera Kebaso, but I prefer to be called Kebaso alias Kebs. I am named  after a famous local politician-John Kebaso; who was assassinated by the Kenyatta regime about the same time I was born. I am the first born in a family of two. I am not sure if this was by design or default, if it is by design, then my mom embraced family planning when it was not fashionable to do so! I was born in Nakuru, District in 197-, where my father used to work at the forest department in Londiani county. My dear and only sister, Naomi  was born 5 years after me. We have come from a very humble background and if I were to tell my story, it will take a good volume of space; but I can summarize it all to one sentence-"God is awesome, the downtrodden are HIS obsession".

Sometimes I marvel when I look back to those days, I never had a slightest glimpse of coming this far, and I therefore look upon every duty, however humble, as sacred because it is a part of God's service. My daily prayer is, "Lord, help me to do my best. Teach me how to do better work. Give me energy and cheerfulness. Help me to bring into my service the loving ministry of the Savior." This far I would not have come were it not for my mother's strong Seventh-day Adventist faith which was hugely influential.

On the professional platform, I hold a Masters degree in Public Health and  I am currently pursuing my Doctorate degree in Public Health. My ambition is to become a top notch Health Researcher and Educator. I look forward to use the skills I am attaining to design implementations that work to reduce health challenges afflicting the impoverished populations in Africa and the rest of the world. I am incited bymy school motto- "To make Man Whole." In essence, I am being prepared for Public service in the Health field and in Academia.

At home, I am a husband, a friend, and lover to my wife, a loving father to my children, a mechanic to my kids' toys, a jack-of-all trade repair man in the house, the seen head of the house during meal times, the arbitrator in a toys dispute, the home budget planner and financial forecaster, and all sorts of multi-roles when times call for such. Above all, I perform duties of the High Priest for my family.

My Family

I am married to one wife, one LENAH BOYANI alias Honey and together we are blessed with one son and one daughter, Zack Kebaso Juniour alias Buddy and Chelsea Maria Kerubo alias mom respectively (Seems like I want to follow the good example set by my beloved mother only that this time it is by design)! These two kids make my life.

I Owe all to my Mother

Because my father was not around a great deal, to have wonderful, positive male role models in the church was a tremendous blessing and made a critical difference in my development. My mother(on the picture next) believed that I could have a career. When I was discouraged, she always said, "Don't let that upset you. You know, you can do it. She also was a self-taught person. She read her Holly Bible and the Adventist Adult Lesson prodigiously. She didn't have anything beyond a high school education, but all through my years in high school and college, when I brought home books in literature, she would read every one of the books that I read. She didn't read the scientific literature, but she understood what I would tell her in terms of what I was doing.

My Hobbies

  •  I like travelling. In tahnk God I chose a field which has enabled me to travel to almost all parts of the world. I have been to every continent excep south America. I hope to set foot there sooner than later. I love outdoor and hiking in general. When I say I am going out, I mean it to the sense of those words.
  • Congregating in church every Saturday and sing the old Hymns. This puts me in tune for heaven for that is the place I long to be. I sing tenor, my wife wishes that I outgrow it and sing bass, but I love it at tenor.
  • I like watching games; in particular soccer seems to take bulky of my free time. I like athletics, and I do long distance races for fun. I have participated in many marathon races, but I have never won a medal! I hope to win one before I get old.
  • Listening to classical music. Gospel and Reggae. Rumba and roots are my favorite; it soothes me a lot and takes me aback to ghetto life.
  • Reading. Getting to know new things is also one of my favourites, this one has been the most challenging because Epidemiology as any other science field evolves so fast and to keep a breast, then I have to read and read on!
  • Finally, I take the words of Ben Carson "Think Big" literally as they stand for the following:
  1. Talent: Our Creator has endowed all of us not just with the ability to sing, dance or throw a ball, but with intellectual talent. Start getting in touch with that part of you that is intellectual and develop that, and think of careers that will allow you to use that.
  2. Honesty: If you lead a clean and honest life, you don't put skeletons in the closet. If you put skeletons in the closet, they definitely will come back just when you don't want to see them and ruin your life.
  3. Insight: It comes from people who have already gone where you're trying to go. Learn from their triumphs and their mistakes.
  4. Nice: If you're nice to people, then once they get over the suspicion of why you're being nice, they will be nice to you.
  5. Knowledge: It makes you a more valuable person. The more knowledge you have, the more people need you. It's an interesting phenomenon, but when people need you, they pay you, so you'll be okay in life.
  6. Books: They are the mechanism for obtaining knowledge, as opposed to television.
  7. In-Depth Learning: Learn for the sake of knowledge and understanding, rather than for the sake of impressing people or taking a test.
  8. God: Never get too big for Him.

Career Aspirations

To complete my PhD studies in epidemiology and I hope to become a top notch researcher in my field. I believe God is not yet through with me.

Best Moments in my life

I have so much to thank god in my life, but the following are the the most memorable ones:-

  1. Learning that I had passed my secondary education exams and I was assured of a place at one of Kenya's six Public Universities(15/02/1994)
  2. My marriage with my one and only wife
  3. Starting a career in research at CDC/KEMRI (15/07/2002).
  4. Graduation Day when I was conferred with MPH degree, coincidentally my wife too graduated on the same day with her first degree in Education (30/10/2003).
  5. The day when our first born came (2004).
  6. My first trip to Europe (2005)
  7. My admission for the Doctorate program.

Worst Moments in my life:-

  1. Too embarassing to reveal here!!!!

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men of talent. Genius will not ... the world is full of educated derelicts. The slogan "Press On" has solved, and always will solve the problems of the human race." -Martin Luther King Junior. With God everything is possible!

Thank you very much and God bless you, God bless me.
